Joseph Hartwell first went to sea at the age of 19, as a hand on the Brig General Warren in 1828, sailing to the West Indies. He took a total of 29 voyages between 1828 and 1846, from his home in Salem, Massachusetts, to ports all over the world.
Joseph eventually became captain of two ships, the Brig Gambia and the Barque Pilot, that journeyed to the Fiji Islands in the South Seas. |
